Questa è la storia che racconta lo spettro di Greta dopo aver scoperto il proprio cadavere in casa, intervallando la ricostruzione della sua vita a incontri con chi ha deciso di farla finita, a cui rivela, in un barlume di consapevolezza finale, la propria natura spettrale e letale. Questa è la storia di un vuoto dentro, nutrito dall’invidia, dalla paura di essere invisibili e dal dover trovare per forza un nemico. L’autrice dà magistralmente vita a un personaggio a tutto tondo costruito con quel tocco tipicamente suo che sa fondere ironia, cinismo, profondità psicologica, superficialità e onestà. Tratteggiate con grande efficacia sono anche le altre figure che le ruotano intorno, in una Seattle anni Novanta anch’essa protagonista, con la sua musica, la sua pioggia, i suoi suicidi.

This is the story told by the ghost of Greta after having discovered her own dead body at home, interspersing the flashback about her life with encounters face to face with those who decided to commit suicide, revealing, in a glimpse of final awareness, her own ghostly and lethal nature. This is the story of a void within, fed by the envy, by the fear of being invisible and by the need to necessarily find an enemy. The author masterfully creates a well-rounded character with her typically touch capable of combining irony, cynicism, psychological depth, superficiality and honesty. S.P. Miskowski describes with great effectiveness also the other characters gravitating around Greta, and the backdrop for this very original story is 1990s Seattle, with its music, its rain and its suicides.

Le tredici storie qui raccolte colpiscono ognuna in modo diverso: catturano l’immaginazione del lettore dalla prima all’ultima parola, coinvolgendolo in un’ambientazione realistica e curata senza il ricorso a lunghe descrizioni; coinvolgono con i loro personaggi diversi eppure in qualche modo simili, figure umane che provano un senso di frustrazione, d’inadeguatezza, di solitudine, spaventose e spaventate, che agiscono e subiscono muovendosi in una realtà specchio fedele dell’America di oggi. Con tocco leggero, S.P. Miskowski coniuga ironia, empatia e cinismo, affondando nella psicologia dei sui personaggi e mostrandoci come la normalità della vita quotidiana venga silenziosamente fagocitata da un orrore dai diversi volti da cui non può esservi fuga né redenzione.

The thirteen stories here collected strike each one differently: they capture the reader’s imagination from the first to the last word, involving him in a realistic and well-finished setting without resorting to long descriptions; they also involve the reader with their characters which are different and yet somehow alike. These are human figures who feel a sense of frustration, unsuitableness or solitude, frightful or frightened, who act and suffer in a reality that is a true reflection of today’s America. With a light touch, S.P. Miskowski combines irony, empathy and cynicism, going deep into her characters’ psychology and showing to us how the normality of daily life is little by little phagocyted by a horror with different faces from where there can be no way out nor redemption.

Con una scrittura elegante e a tratti poetica, questi racconti si prestano a una lettura lenta, meditata, non certo di facile e rapido consumo. Ma è proprio qui che risiede il fascino e tutta la ricchezza di questo libro. Si tratta di storie che hanno temi come la diversità, la ricerca d’identità, la sopravvivenza, i difficili rapporti interpersonali, l’essere genitori, il senso di colpa. Il concetto profondo di “mostruosità” ha uno spettro assai ampio, che include la diversità animale e la bestialità umana. I protagonisti hanno un profondissimo legame o con rettili o con gli uccelli (e con gli insetti) o le creature del mare. Vengono spesso affrontati temi sociali importanti che sono poi catapultati in una dimensione “ai margini della realtà”, nel senso ampio di questa espressione.

Written in an elegant and almost poetic style, these stories are particularly suitable for a deep and thoughtful reading, and not for a quick and easy one. That it’s precisely where the whole allure and all the richness of this book lie. The themes of these stories are the diversity, the search for identity, the survival, the difficult relationship with other people, parenthood and the sense of guilt. The deep concept of “monstrosity” has a very broad spectrum and includes both the animal otherness and the human bestiality. Here have the protagonists a very deep connection with reptiles or birds (and/or insects) or with sea creatures. The author deals with important social themes, which are then projected in a dimension “at the edge of reality”, in the broadest sense of this expression.

Joan Samson, The Auctioneer, Valancourt Books, 2018, pp. 226 (prima edizione Simon&Schuster 1976).

A Harlowe, un’isolata comunità agricola del New Hampshire, la vita scorre tranquilla e sempre uguale. Quando però il carismatico Perly Dunsmore arriva in città e inizia e richiedere donazioni per le sue aste, qualcosa inizia a cambiare. Mentre il banditore d’asta attua il suo terribile e imperscrutabile piano, i Moore e i loro vicini si ritroveranno a poco a poco e inesorabilmente privati della loro libertà, dei loro possedimenti e, forse, anche delle loro vite… Joan Samson non solo ha saputo cogliere l’essenza di quell’America degli anni Sessanta e Settanta, in cui il ritorno alla campagna e alle radici degli Stati Uniti venivano visti come un idillio sullo sfondo della guerra del Vietnam, ma riesce ancor oggi a interpretare il nostro presente. Un gran bel romanzo da riscoprire.

When Linda Addison kindly asked me if I was interested in reviewing a collection of dark fiction and poetry by African-American women I was overjoyed and even more so when I received the pdf from the Publisher Rochon Perry, Cedar Grove Publishing (the over 500 page volume wouldn’t have been published, as in fact it was, until February 2017). È un po’ di tempo che l’idea mi gironzolava anarchica per la testa. L’occasione per partire sul serio è nata da una recensione che ho scritto (apparirà nell’ultimo numero del magazine Hypnos) dell’antologia edita quest’anno dalla NewCon Press Obsidian: A Decade of Horror Stories by Women, a cura di Ian Whates, e da una delle domande che ho posto nell’ultima delle Diaboliche Interviste a Andrea Vaccaro (Le autrici, il fantastico e Edizioni Hypnos).
