Con una scrittura elegante e a tratti poetica, questi racconti si prestano a una lettura lenta, meditata, non certo di facile e rapido consumo. Ma è proprio qui che risiede il fascino e tutta la ricchezza di questo libro. Si tratta di storie che hanno temi come la diversità, la ricerca d’identità, la sopravvivenza, i difficili rapporti interpersonali, l’essere genitori, il senso di colpa. Il concetto profondo di “mostruosità” ha uno spettro assai ampio, che include la diversità animale e la bestialità umana. I protagonisti hanno un profondissimo legame o con rettili o con gli uccelli (e con gli insetti) o le creature del mare. Vengono spesso affrontati temi sociali importanti che sono poi catapultati in una dimensione “ai margini della realtà”, nel senso ampio di questa espressione.

Written in an elegant and almost poetic style, these stories are particularly suitable for a deep and thoughtful reading, and not for a quick and easy one. That it’s precisely where the whole allure and all the richness of this book lie. The themes of these stories are the diversity, the search for identity, the survival, the difficult relationship with other people, parenthood and the sense of guilt. The deep concept of “monstrosity” has a very broad spectrum and includes both the animal otherness and the human bestiality. Here have the protagonists a very deep connection with reptiles or birds (and/or insects) or with sea creatures. The author deals with important social themes, which are then projected in a dimension “at the edge of reality”, in the broadest sense of this expression.

Sabato 6 ottobre a Stranimondi

Ieri, per la terza volta, mi sono ritrovata in un posto strano, con tanta gente strana… Stranimondi è giunto alla sua quarta edizione e a me come sempre è piaciuto. Prosegue anche oggi, con tanti altri incontri interessanti che mi devo necessariamente perdere (famiglia+lavoro=oggi stai a casa). 

Voglio ricominciare a scribacchiare su questo blog da qui, da dove mi ero interrotta un bel po’ di tempo fa. E voglio ricominciare da dove avevo lasciato: Anne-Sylvie Salzman. È stata una piacevole sorpresa incontrarla nuovamente a Stranimondi.

Anne-Sylvie Salzman plays a very interesting role in the publishing world. She founded and currently co-directs Le Visage Vert, a literary magazine and small press on supernatural fiction. She is a translator from English into her mother tongue, French (she’s translated so far more than 80 books), she is a writer (of novels, Au bord d’un lent fleuve noir, Sommeil and Dernières nouvelles d’Œsthrénie, and of two story collections, Lamont and Vivre sauvage dans les villes), she is a translated author (Tartarus Press in Great Britain and Edizioni Hypnos in Italy have translated her story collections).

So many different facets which allow Anne-Sylvie Salzman to have a full understanding of this matter.

Anne-Sylvie Salzman occupa una posizione molto peculiare all’interno del mondo editoriale, perché in lei si concentrano più figure professionali: fondatrice e co-direttrice di Le Visage Vert, rivista letteraria e piccola casa editrice di narrativa soprannaturale; traduttrice dall’inglese al francese (finora ha tradotto più di 80 libri); scrittrice (di romanzi come Au bord d’un lent fleuve noir, Sommeil e Dernières nouvelles d’Œsthrénie, e due raccolte di racconti, Lamont e Vivre sauvage dans les villes) e autrice tradotta (in Inghilterra dalla Tartarus Press, in Italia dalle Edizioni Hypnos). Tante diverse sfaccettature che consentono ad Anne-Sylvie Salzman di avere di questa realtà una visione più che mai ampia.

When Linda Addison kindly asked me if I was interested in reviewing a collection of dark fiction and poetry by African-American women I was overjoyed and even more so when I received the pdf from the Publisher Rochon Perry, Cedar Grove Publishing (the over 500 page volume wouldn’t have been published, as in fact it was, until February 2017). I found myself facing an incredible project both for its significance as for the quality of the texts.

Edizioni Hypnos è una casa editrice milanese fondata nel 2010 e specializzata in letteratura fantastica e weird.

L’idea che mi sono fatta io di Andrea Achille Vaccaro è quella di un raffinato editore, un grande appassionato di letteratura di genere, centrato sul suo obiettivo di (ri)portare alla luce opere dall’indubbio quanto spesso misconosciuto valore letterario. In Weird we trust, pay-off perfetto, è una chiara attestazione di questa missione.
